Sorry but I found Alexa to be a total pain. I guess she was meant to be the female version of a playboy: but I found her unappealing. She seemed self-absorbed and still living a lifestyle that was dated and uninteresting. As for running casinos in Las Vegas, - is that meant to be glamorous? I like the Dare series - and have read some cracking stories by other writers, but I was really disappointed with this one. The characters never came alive for me and I could not believe that Carter had been Sorry but I found Alexa to be a total pain.
The characters never came alive for me and I could not believe that Carter had been in love with Alexa for all these years, watching as she indulged in oodles of casual sex, and being happy just to be her best friend, A nerdy friend with benefits he similarly played around. Her attitude was adolescent. It did not feel authentic. I did not understand the love for casinos and worst of all - the sex was strangely stilted and mechanical. I really love well-written erotic love scenes, but somehow nothing in this book worked for me.
It was full of description and instruction without the frisson of a truly erotic encounter. The fake-finance and then the real but drunken marriage, were well done and I liked how that was developed but I never really came to terms with Alexa. She seemed to me to be a selfish, thoughtless and utterly self-centred character.
Any vulnerability came too late for me. Her reaction to him buying the casino was so over the top as to be ridiculous and I hated that he had to do the grovelling. Disappointing for me personally, 2. I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review. The main reason is the heroine Alexa. She's emotionally all over the place and has consistently either used the hero or taken him for granted. She so did not deserve 16 years of dogged devotion. To start off she's bitchy, promiscuous, emotionally needy and completely dense to her own feelings and oblivious of Carters.
Towards the end I just found her irrational and annoying. He buys her a casino and she completely flies off the handle. It's such a shame because for the majority of this I adored the hero Carter - he was really good with Alexa working out what she needed and making it happen.
She'd be totally lost without him. However, I'm not so sure if the reverse is true and he wouldn't be better off without her - she turns his life upside down. Other than the fact that he adores her and so no other woman would do, you do get the feeling that his life with her is not going to be easy. However towards the end he gets a bit sulky and combined with Alexa's emotional infancy you just want to bang their he together.
This one also really lacks external plot. Now in some ways that works because the focus is the emotional intensity of the two characters - but I needed a little more to distract me from their monumental stupidity at times. I also couldn't get my head around why Alexa was so pissed Carter bought her casino.
She adored it - casinos were her life and Carter who knows her better than she knows herself understands this. If she really had reconciled herself to sell and A nerdy friend with benefits not totally sure she had, then a simple conversation would have solved the issue - I get that she's kind of using it as an excuse for her fear of commitment - but to me it just felt overly irrational. It's hard to rate this one because it has an awesome hero and a fantastic premise as well as electric chemistry between our two lovers - yet it doesn't have enough plot and the heroine did little for me.
I felt like it was too fast-paced - to the point where I felt like I was watching a movie on fast forward since there was no real flow to the story whatsoever - and that the execution of this storyline as a whole was just choppy. I couldn't feel the chemistry between these characters at all, and at one point I actually forgot that this was a romance because there was no development to Carter and Alexa's feelings for one another, and all they did was 1.
I couldn't feel the chemistry between these characters at all, and at one point I actually forgot that this was a romance because there was no development to Carter and Alexa's feelings for one another, and all they did was argue and have sex. I felt like they were better off as friends, and they shouldn't have taken that step forward to becoming lovers, especially not as fast as they did. There were some moments throughout this story that I did enjoy, which is why I'm rating it 1. Unfortunately, as a whole, this story didn't live up to the expectations I had of it, which is really disappointing as I had really high hopes for this novel, and I was really excited to read it.
But I just didn't enjoy this story; I didn't enjoy the storyline itself, nor did I enjoy the writing. I'm conflicted about how I feel about the characters, because there were moments where I did like them - enough to save me from giving this book a solid one star rating - but they argued too much for my liking, and it soon got to the point where I felt like Friends with Benefits was just getting to be too repetitive of going through that cycle of arguing, then making up, then arguing again, and so on.
It sucks that I feel this way about this story, but I just found that I was not and could not A nerdy friend with benefits to anything with this book, which is why I found that Friends with Benefits was just not for me. Best Friends Carter and Alexa are at the heart of this story, these are two characters who have some sizzling chemistry that sits right below the surface ready to explode. This book in two words is sizzling sexy, the story behind the chemistry is good but the main attraction is the chemistry.
When you come across the Dare portions of this book, they are super hot. The characters and story is simply amazing. The chemistry is out of this worl Best Friends Carter and Alexa are at the heart of this story, these are two characters who have some sizzling chemistry that sits right below the surface ready to explode. The chemistry is out of this world. Definitely one to read if you love the Dare series. Oct 01, Maura Schneider rated it it was amazing. What happens in Vegas I loved the fast-paced writing and incredible chemistry between the characters, as well as the Vegas casino backdrop.
Friends to lovers trope romance with the added spice of the Dare series. Set in Las Vegas, the setting didn't endear itself, neither did the gambling references. Similarly, the characters are hard to like because of their preoccupation with money, and one night stands. Alexa, runs a casino and enjoys gambling and playing the romantic field, serially. Carter, her longtime best friend, is a technical genius, but again has made serious money by providing security devices for casinos and other org Friends to lovers trope romance with the added spice of the Dare series.
Carter, her longtime best friend, is a technical genius, but again has made serious money by providing security devices for casinos and other organisations. The chemistry between them is what makes this story readable. I like friends to lovers romances, but the fake engagement isn't believable because it goes against both of the character's independent, don't care what anybody else thinks characteristics.
The romance is hot and sensual, but awkward in parts, maybe to illustrate the difficulties the characters had with their new relationship? The ending is happy.
